Setting up a VPN on Windows 10

Bebra VPN installs on any Windows 10 build, 32-bit or 64-bit, and opens in a guest account with no sign-up. Two settings are worth turning on right away: Tunnel and autostart.

Windows 7 SP1 and newer · version 1.21.0

Installing on Windows 10

  1. Run Bebra.exe

Download the installer with the button above and run it. Windows asks whether the app may make changes to your device. Click Yes, since the VPN can’t start without those rights.

  2. Get a subscription

The app window opens by itself, with an account for this PC already set up. That account has no subscription yet, so clicking a country opens Buy Bebra VPN. A subscription you paid for earlier comes back through Already have a subscription? → Sign in to account in that window.

  3. Click a flag

With a subscription, a click on a country connects at once, and the line at the top changes to Connected to that country.

Worth setting up first

Tunnel. With the Tunnel button at the top, you choose which traffic skips the VPN. In Manual mode you list the exceptions yourself, one IP address, subnet or domain per line, and traffic to them goes straight to the internet.

Autostart. If you use the VPN every day, tick Launch the app on system startup in Account → Settings, and Bebra VPN will start together with Windows.

Split tunneling

In this mode, traffic to the listed IP addresses, subnets and domains will go directly, bypassing the VPN.

Windows 10 specifics

The app stopped connecting after a Windows update

That happens when it was installed on one of the first builds, 1507 or 1511, and Windows has since moved to 1607 or later. The app then shows “Windows has been updated”, and its Reinstall the app button gets the connection working again.

Do I need to restart after installing?

Usually not. On build 1507 the installer first adds .NET Framework 4.6.1 and may then ask for a restart, which it will tell you about. If the app says it needs administrator rights after setup, restart as well. Sometimes that’s the only way the rights take effect.

Why did the app start with Windows when autostart is off?

Most likely the PC was shut down while the VPN was on. In that case Bebra VPN starts at the next sign-in and restores the connection. Click Disconnect before shutting down and it won’t.
